About Us

The California Central Coast Genealogical Society (“Society”) formed in Morro Bay in 1967. By 1973, the Society established its first genealogical library at the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Building where it served patrons for more than thirty years. Early on, the Society met in a small room in Morro Bay. Next they moved the meeting site to Atascadero, thereafter to San Luis Obispo. In 1980, The Society established a second genealogical library at the South County Library in Arroyo Grande. Seven years later, the Society changed its name to the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society, Inc. In 2000, the city of Atascadero terminated its library agreement with the Society and the Society eventually found a home at the Carnegie Library Museum in Paso Robles. The Society’s North County genealogical library suffered a significant setback after the 2003 San Simeon Earthquake. Its holdings were relocated to the San Luis Obispo City/County Library in 2008, the current site.

In 2021 we partnered with the São Jorge Genealogical Society to digitize records from the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. These records had been unavailable except through the Monterey Diocese or the Huntington Library.  The Death and Burial records from 1838-1952 and Baptism records from 1870-1908 are now available for viewing at our San Luis Obispo library and through the specific link under the Resources tab on our website.
