Local history. Nearly sixty Civil War veterans settled in the South County between the 1870s and 1900. Four fought at Gettysburg, six on Sherman’s March, seven–including Arroyo Grande’s turn-of-the-century baby doctor–in the Appomattox Campaign. One was awarded the Medal of Honor. They were the generation that, with the help of the arrival of the Pacific Coast Railway in 1881, helped to build our town.
